Plasmacluster Ions Inactivate an Airborne Corona Virus

Recently, new viral-based infectious diseases such as SARS (corona viruses) and avian influenza (orthomyxoviruses) have made their appearance, and cases that threaten human health are on the increase. In seeking new technologies for purifying the air, Sharp has systematically verified the efficacy of Plasmacluster Ions in deactivating harmful substances that are the cause of illnesses spread through the medium of the air.

Plasmacluster Ion technology is Sharp's proprietary air purification technology in which large numbers of positive and negative ions are generated from airborne water and oxygen molecules and then released back into the air in large quantities. These ions form clusters around micro particles such as airborne mold influenza viruses and mite allergens, and render them inactive through chemical reaction. Sharp developed this air purification technology in 2000, and is working with leading academic research institutions around the world to verify its effectiveness. Based on the scientific data that emerges from this industry academia collaboration, Sharp will develop and introduce new products to the market.

Plasmacluster Ion Technology

The air we breathe is a basic human necessity, playing a vital role in our health and general well-being. However in today's environment, unpolluted, fresh, clean air is scarce, as pollutants such as microbes, germs and airborne viruses dominate, increasing the spread of flu and other viruses which make us feel ill and unwell.

Benefits of Plasmacluster Ion Technology

Plasmacluster Ion technology is an original Sharp sanitising technology that purifies the air by emitting positive and negative ions. Plasmacluster Ion technology deactivates suspended airborne mould, viruses, dust mite allergens and bacteria. It attacks a wide range of odours including pet, cooking, garbage and cigarette smoke.

  • Freshens the air with negative ions.
  • Neutralises odour-causing molecules with positive and negative ions.
  • Reduces suspended allergens and floating mould spores with positive and negative ions.
  • Reduces suspended viruses with positive and negative ions.

How it works

Stage 1: Plasmacluster Ions are similar to positive and negative ions found in nature. The ions are surrounded by water molecules and are released into the air.

Stage 2: The ions from hydroxide (OH) radicals are highly oxidising when they adhere to the surfaces of airborne microbes, such as suspended allergens, bacteria, mould and viruses. They remove hydrogen from the surface proteins, breaking them down.

Stage 3: The hydroxide (OH) radicals combine with hydrogen (H) to form water (H20) which is returned to the air.
